Lost Windows Disk for my PDA – Does it matter really?
I was recently given a used HP iPAQ hx2400 PDA from work, however, apon opening the box and inspecting it, I dont have the actual “Windows 2002 Mobile /w Outlook 2002″ disk, but I have its casing AND the serial number, my problem is, if I ever have to hard reset it, will I lose Outlook and the other programs that were on there that I can only retrieve if I have the disk? Not that there are too many times when you do need to hard reset, but just in case.
I have not worked with an HP iPAQ. In earlier versions of Windows Mobile handhelds, all the key Microsoft applications (including Mobile Outlook) were hard-coded in ROM, and were not lost after a hard reset — all your data on the handheld was lost and any additional applications you loaded. I am guessing the disk/CD has the Windows ActiveSync program for syncing with your handheld. You should be able to find that somewhere on Microsoft’s web site. The disk/CD may have certain extra applications from HP (or licensed by HP from a third-party) that you can’t get back if you perform a hard reset. I do not know how to tell whether an application is running from ROM or just saved in battery-backed RAM.
From the HP site, it appears you can also purchase an upgrade to Windows Mobile 5.0, if you wish.
